Athabasca River Basin seeking ‘personhood’

It is an exciting time at the Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA). Ecojustice has filed a Statement of Concern (on behalf of AWA and the Keepers of the Water) to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) requesting the regulator recognize the River Basin as a legal person.

It is sad that legal steps are necessary to try and get the Government of Alberta and the AER to act in the public’s best interest in protecting our water and ecosystems. However, it is energizing to see so many eager to see this come to fruition. With the province facing dire drought conditions, the need to protect our water from industrial overuse and abuse is necessary.
