The Midsummer finally getting a new teak deck!

Mombasa, Kenya (May, 2024)

Andrew Korek spent many years at sea in both the Royal Marines and working with the Canadian Navy. He also has his own diving company (Phoenix Marine Services). When he heard about this old sailing boat that was dying a slow death in Kenya, he was inspired to check it out. Passion was born. Drew has invested major funds and time in restoring this old 1910 schooner. His hope is to get her seaworthy, bring her back to Canada, and then utilize her for sail training, boutique cargo and as a retreat for veterans with PTSD.

This restoration is a project of love. The schooner Midsummer was built in 1910 and has a long history at sea before she went aground off Zanzibar, and was subsequently abandoned and then laid up at Mombasa. Drew’s work on this ship has been inspiring. If you want to know more you can check out the website or socials.
