A VR Experience - Horizon of Khufu

You all know I love Egypt! I wasn’t sure what to expect from this encounter, but I’m certainly glad I went!

The sign at the entrance to the experience. The event is located at the North end of Chinook Mall, and not as I assumed it would be, at the Movie Theatre.

This was my first VR adventure, and I have to say I finally understand why some gamers have fallen in love with the technology. As an archaeologist I have been fortunate enough to have been physically inside Khufu’s pyramid and spent lots of time in Giza, in and around the pyramid complex. When I was working for the Grand Egyptian Museum the view of the pyramids was my work site.

I not only recognized the surroundings, but the accuracy of the depictions was amazing. Being able to see the entire pyramid complex, including the graffiti on the top of Khufu’s pyramid is just not possible to see in-person anymore. Getting to virtually pet Bastet is something else! 🐈‍⬛

When the Giza Plateau was virtually transformed from how it looks now, to how it looked in the Old Kingdom, it took my breath away.

You really feel immersed in the landscape, and riding the solar barque on the Nile was fantastic. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but as an Egyptologist I have to say that I was really moved by the experience and highly recommend it. The event is being held in Calgary until January 31, 2025.

PS I would love to see this type of technological experience at Dendera and Luxor!
