Northern Thailand Traditional Life

Part I - Pottery and Dancing

I’m so fortunate to have family in Thailand. My sister-in-law brought me with her to visit many places that would be difficult for a tourist to see on their own. I am so grateful to her for that. I would like to share some of these experiences here.

Living in rural northern Thailand… Buddhist festivals, fishing, weaving, pottery, food, silver craft, water buffalo… I hope to cover them all. Here is a photo journal of traditional pottery methods and the return of Buddha’s statue to the temple in Chiang Kham.

Women potters from Tueng Lom, Chiang Kham, northern Thailand, with their everyday wares (stoves, cooking pots, planters, urns, etc.).

They have some amazing skills and were absolutely lovely to speak with. Their work is challenging, but they seem to have developed a strong bond with each other. Each woman responsible for a different pot style. I was mesmerized by their ability to chat and throw at the same time. They said their biggest concern is that younger women in the village don’t seem interested in this type of work, so they don’t know how much longer they will be able to keep the shop open.

The people of Chiang Kham seemed thrilled for the festival, and it brought out the traditional clothes, costumes, dances and drumming. It was exciting to watch the pride they took in their culture and traditions.
